Teeth Crowns, Tooth Bridge, Dental Implants

In Naples and Fort Myers, Florida

Teeth crowns, bridges and dental implants are important dentistry treatments that help patients enhance the functionality and appearance of their smiles.  Crowns and bridges restore and strengthen damaged or decayed natural teeth, and implants are permanently-fixed tooth replacements for lost teeth.

Teeth Crowns
When a patient has a natural tooth that has been damaged due to decay or injury, or is weakened due to a root canal procedure or outdated filling, Dr. Massa may recommend a porcelain crown.  A porcelain crown, or cap, is shaped out of porcelain to fit on the tops of teeth and comfortably fit your unique bite.  Cemented onto the tooth with a special adhesive and fitted at the gumline, a porcelain crown can add significant strength to your tooth, protect the enamel under it, and allows you to continue chewing normally.  Because the porcelain material used for crowning is tooth-colored and chosen to fit your tooth shade, modern porcelain crowns look and feel just like natural teeth.

Tooth Bridge
When a patient has a missing tooth, a bridge may be recommended.  A bridge anchors a false tooth, or pontic, in the tooth-gap by attaching it to two crowns placed on the natural teeth bordering the gap.  With a well-constructed bridge, patients regain their chewing ability and get an improved smile to boot!  Filling in missing teeth positively impacts your facial structure, improves your bite, and decreases the amount of stress on remaining teeth.

To determine if a bridge is right for you, Dr. Massa will first determine if the surrounding teeth are adequate for crown placement.  When you are ready to begin your bridge, Dr. Massa will shape the bordering teeth in preparation for crowns.  Then, an impression of the area is taken (the missing tooth, plus the two bordering teeth). A custom-designed bridge is then created, consisting of your pontic anchored to two crowns.  While your final bridge is being made, you will wear a temporary bridge.  Then, your new bridge is fitted and placed for maximum comfort. With proper care, your dental bridge should remain functional and natural-looking for eight to fifteen years!

Dental Implants
Implants are great alternatives to missing teeth, providing patients with strong, natural-looking materials to fill in unsightly gaps.  A popular alternative to partial dentures, implants are expertly-anchored to the jawbone and placed into the gums where the tooth roots lie.  Implants may be used to replace a single tooth, secure a bridge, or attach a partial denture.  Nearly all patients are candidates for dental implant placement, with the exception of patients who lack the bone density needed for attachment.  Implants are designed to look just like natural teeth and greatly improve patients’ smile appearances.

For dental implant placement, you will need to undergo minor gum surgery.  Dr. Massa will work with the surgeon to plan correct implant placement.  Once the jaw bone is determined to have grown around the implants correctly, usually after a period of three to six months, Dr. Massa will fabricate the correct anchor-post and recreated-tooth over the implant.

Following the procedures, you will need to follow post-op instructions carefully and take any antibiotics or pain medication prescribed.  To keep your implant functional, make sure to keep it clean and free of bacteria.
