Neuromuscular Surgery for TMD
- Posted on: Apr 15 2018
Most dental procedures focus on making sure that you have healthy teeth and gums, but other structures can affect your oral health as well. You may experience pain and tenderness in your upper or lower jaw bone, and this may indicate a problem with the muscles and joint. Neuromuscular surgery is an option to address issues that cause temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMD.
What is TMD?
TMD, or temporomandibular joint disorder, describes a condition in which the patient experiences pain and other symptoms due to a misalignment of the bite. When the teeth are not aligned properly, it places stress on the temporomandibular joint of the jaw, as well as the muscles that move the jaw. TMD is sometimes referred to as TMJ or temporomandibular joint syndrome.
Do I Need Treatment for TMD?
TMD does need to be monitored by your oral health provider to ensure that no serious complications develop. Moderate cases of TMD may lead to problems chewing, talking and swallowing. In advanced cases, the condition causes lock jaw, ringing in the ears, trouble sleeping, migraines and pain in the neck and upper back.
Can TMD Be Treated with Orthodontics?
Orthodontic treatments do aim to improve a person’s bite, yet the treatments typically address many other problems aside from TMD. More focused treatments may be appropriate for patients with TMD. Some dental appliances help reposition the bite, but surgery may be needed to correct any abnormalities.
How Does Neuromuscular Surgery Help with TMD?
A neuromuscular surgeon is trained in methods to evaluate how muscle function affects bite and jaw alignment. In more severe cases of TMD, such as those that have not responded to more conservative approaches, the goal of surgery is to modify the joint, jaw bone and muscles to bring the bite into proper alignment. Neuromuscular surgery may also be recommended to repair the damage that is caused by TMD and misalignment of the bite.
